Teak is one of the most forgiving woods to own. Follow these simple steps and your furniture will outlive you.
Indoor teak furniture benefits from a teak oil application once a year, usually before the dry winter season. Outdoor pieces should be oiled twice a year — once before summer and once before monsoon.
Avoid wax-based polishes and silicone sprays. They seal the pores and prevent the wood from breathing, which can lead to cracking over time. Use only purpose-made teak oil or a food-safe oil like pure tung oil.
No — greying is a natural process called silvering, caused by UV exposure and oxidation. The timber is not damaged. A light sand with 220-grit sandpaper followed by teak oil will restore the original golden colour in a single afternoon.
For fresh stains, wipe immediately with a dry cloth. For dried water rings, lightly sand the area with 220-grit sandpaper along the grain, then re-oil. Deep stains may need 150-grit, then 220-grit, then oil.
